Sectoral networks To improve for students the step from school to the labor market, we have chosen to set up a network of cooperation with certain industries. The sectoral networks bring actors from the educational field and the labor market together, to improve the transition from education to employment in certain industries. Based on a solid analysis we set up incentives. Objective We want to improve the transition from education – labor market by
Working on the infrastructure of trainers Setting up incentives for more employment places where students can learn the trade Strengthen the process of choosing the right education and profession
Methodology Not every industry applies the same approach. However, every sectoral cooperation applies the same three steps:

Overview sectoral networks Education Primary education in Antwerp has to fill in the next 10 years approximately 3500 vacancies. The Antwerp department of education wants to facilitate the flow into education and decrease of dropout in cooperation with the Antwerp educational partners, the federal department of education and the VDAB. On this webpage teachers, individuals who want to become teachers and anyone interested to acquiring a job within the educational field can find information. Construction The collaboration with the construction industry has lead to the foundation of Talentenwerf. This organization provides information on jobs and educational programs in construction industries and also develops projects to improve the transition from education to employment. In the future a service will be set up specially for all professionals teaching in the field of construction. More information? Go to the website of Talentenwe Tertiary/Trade The sectoral network tertiary/trade brings the study directions trade and office together with clerical functions in logistics, metal, chemistry, commerce, distribution and ANPCB218 (= umbrella of clerical professions) With 106.000 vacancies the tertiary industry is crucial for Antwerp.

Industry The sectoral network industry brings together all relevant organizations for education and employment and the Antwerp industry. Industry is understood here as the chemical and technological (metal and electricity) industry. Incentives are taken for the regions of Antwerp and St-Niklaas with regard to internships, educational possibilities, infrastructure and choice of the study and profession. Logistic We are looking together at how we can as a logistic industry (storage, packaging and shipping of goods) improve our collaboration. These are professions such as storage worker, customs, shipping agent and logistic manager. Within the corporate world the professions are distributed among various industries. In the field of education we mostly find programs providing training for commercial and economical professions or studies evolving around car mechanics. One of the most important tasks is promoting the logistic sector as sector with versatile jobs and many possibilities for the future. Incentives like ‘Jonge haven’ that we set up together with the network industry, attempt to bring more youngsters from primary and secondary schools in contact with the port and the various professions linked to it. We want to work even more active on a program to also upgrade the knowledge of teachers and counselors about the port. Besides that we have done research about the future profiles in the logistic sector and the most crucial competences that beginning workers need to dispose over. Also internships are on the agenda. Catering industry Not many youngsters choose for a catering education in secondary school. In 17 schools you can take secondary education in catering. The catering industry is a field that is currently in need of workers: approximately 50 % of the professions in this industry are in great demand. The sectoral network of the catering industry combines forces with the schools, sector organizations, industry funds, VDAB, RTC, Antwerp, other educators and the Antwerp municipality to improve the transition between education and employment. The sectoral network of the catering industry was set up in 2009. In 2010 a demand and supply analysis of the labor market of the Antwerp catering industry was conducted; an analysis that also maps the education possibilities. Based on the analysis and on the following themes, a sectoral action plan was set up : research & analysis, educational possibilities & infrastructure, information & communication, choice of study & education and internships. The demand and supply analysis will be supplemented by an investigation with regard to competences and staff policies in the Antwerp catering industry. On the basis of these results new actions can be set up. Furthermore, there is the intention to work on campaign to raise awareness on the need to improve the image of the catering industry, to improve internships and on the possibility to share infrastructure. There will be also looked at how professional kitchens & caterers can be involved in the social economy within the sectoral network.
